SUMMARY:March Underground Railroad Tour
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Black History Month\, the Historical Society will host a bus tour of Jersey County’s Underground Railroad on Wednesday\, March 13\, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. \nWe’ll board the bus at the Cheney House and then head south to see the historic Rocky Fork Church in Godfrey\, the first stop for many freedom seekers who traveled through Jersey County. Other stops will include the Hamilton Primary School in Otterville\, and the site of Josiah White’s cabin. \nDuring the tour\, we’ll learn about the county’s earliest settlers and how their origins influenced their views of slavery. We’ll discuss slavery in Illinois and answer the question: Were slaves owned in Jersey County? We’ll also introduce several local men who risked everything to help slaves move northward to gain their freedom. \nThe tour will end back at the Cheney House where you’ll see where freedom seekers sought shelter during their journey north. We’ll share who we believe may have been responsible for the creation of this stop on the Underground Railroad. \nTickets are $40\, and reservations and prepayment are required. Call or text Beth at 618-520-2681 for reservations. \nWe haven’t offered an Underground Railroad tour in more than 20 years. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about this fascinating chapter of Jersey County history.

SUMMARY:Lone Star School Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a one-room school reunion on the lawn of the Lone Star School on Saturday\, June 24\, from 2 to 4 p.m. The address is 601 N. State St.\, Jerseyville. \nAnyone who attended a one-room school in Jersey or the surrounding counties or who is interested in one-room schools is welcome to attend. \nHistorical Society Board Member Patsy Halemeyer says\, “Bring lawn chairs\, your family\, friends\, and memories. We’ll provide iced tea and cookies. There will be no recitations\, tests\, or grades\, just a relaxing and fun afternoon.” \nThe Lone Star School dates back to 1877 and was one of more than 70 one-room schools located throughout the county. The school originally stood roughly 13 miles west of Jerseyville\, near the intersection of Routes 16 and 100. \nFor more than 75 years\, students in the area were taught the three R’s (reading\, ’riting and ’rithmetic) in the humble one-room school. \nWater for the school was originally supplied by a nearby spring. One former student recalled having to run pigs out of the spring and then letting the mud settle before getting a bucket of water. \nThe school was closed in 1952. In 1955\, Patsy’s grandparents\, Clifton and Josie Schudel\, bought the building and the ground on which it sat for $961. They paid an additional $7.25 for personal property\, which included a piano. \nOwnership of the school was maintained by the Schudel family for three generations. In 2001\, Patsy and her husband\, Bill Halemeyer\, donated the Lone Star School to the Historical Society. It was moved to its present location two years later. \nToday\, the school includes many of its original contents\, including the oil lamps\, writing canvas (the school was built before blackboards became commonplace)\, school library\, and its student desks. \nSpecial guest Drake Goetten\, winner of the 2023 Jersey County Historical Society Scholarship\, will read his winning essay\, which describes what it was like to attend a one-room school.

SUMMARY:Dearly Departed
DESCRIPTION:Just in time for the Halloween season\, Dearly Departed is sure to provide you with a unique experience you won’t soon forget. Join us as we explore the funerary\, mourning\, and embalming practices of the late Victorian era as they were observed in Jersey County and the surrounding region. Featuring authentic embalming equipment\, mourning attire\, burial receptacles\, human hair art\, and so much more\, explore the historic Cheney House as it serves as a backdrop of what funerals would have looked like in a time when they were almost exclusively held in the home. Visitors will also see how a home “dressed” for mourning\, learning about why mirrors were covered\, lights were dimmed\, portraits were draped or hidden from view\, and why door badges were hung on entryways. \nTours will be held on October 8\, 15\, 22 and 29\, with tours beginning at 10 am\, 11 am\, Noon\, 1 pm\, and 2 pm. Each tour will last just under one hour. Parking is provided behind the house and it is recommended visitors arrive at least ten minutes prior to the start of their tour. Admission may be paid upon arrival\, cash or check only. It is recommended you call in advance to reserve your spot by contacting Connor Ashlock at 618-946-0767. Weekday evening tours are available by appointment. \nAlso\, self-guided tours will be available on the evening of October 25 from 5-9 pm for $5 during the Jersey County Business Association’s Open Late event\, “Nightmare on State Street.”
